What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day got its start in 2015 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Amazon’s founding. If you haven’t heard about Prime Day before, it’s a once-a-year HUGE sale at Amazon — like, 100,000 items get put on sale. It’s bigger than Black Friday for Amazon. I have been a Prime member for years (and you have to be a member of Amazon Prime in order to get these deals) and been shopping Prime Day Deals for a while now. But I recently learned that it is possible to find out in advance what things are going to go on sale. I looked and I found some really interesting Prime Day Launch items in Electronics I’ll be adding to my shopping list for myself and my family — and I thought you might like to know about these deals, too. You can find more Prime Day Launch items in all categories here. But be warned — it’s addicting.

When is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day 2020 starts Tuesday, October 13 this year and runs through Wednesday, October 14! Prime Day 2020 will run for 48 hours, which makes it the longest Prime Day in Amazon’s history. Amazon’s two-day shopping event will offer a smorgasbord of deals on laptopstabletsChromebooksMacBooks, and iPads.

In years past, Prime Day has fallen sometime in mid-July. However this year, as with all things in 2020, Prime Day got delayed and no one was sure it was even going to happen. In 2018, for example, this same sale was only 36 hours long. So this year now there’s an extra 12 hours to shop. It’s kind of like the way Black Friday now starts on Thanksgiving Day or even earlier.

How do I sign up for Amazon Prime?

Even though you can sign up for Amazon Prime anytime leading up to when the biggest deals go live, now is probably the best time to do so, because only Prime members have access to all these money-saving steals.

Not sure how to become a member? Check out Amazon’s How To Shop Like Pro On Prime Day for all the insider information and then head over to Amazon to sign up. If you’re hesitant about committing to a membership, you’re in luck: Amazon also offers 30-day free trials, as well as six-month free trials for students. You can also try Amazon Prime with a discounted monthly plan.

Make sure to mark your calendar, set your alarm, and get your Prime account ready for October 13. Because you won’t want to miss out this year; all signs point to it being the best Amazon Prime Day yet.

Tech Deals

Amazon Prime Day doesn’t officially start until October 13, but we got the early word on a few deals that will be available. Here are some of the deals already announced to start Prime Day off (I will update this list as I find more amazing deals throughout the day):

Early Prime Day Deals

  • Kindle Unlimited Monthly Plans. Get unlimited reading, unlimited listening, on any device with Kindle Unlimited 6, 12 and 24-month membership plans. Kindle Unlimited lets you read all the books you want, though from a relatively modest library of about 1 million titles.
  • Free PC games from Twitch. Amazon already gives Prime subscribers free games every month. In the run-up to Prime Day and for a couple days after, it’s giving away a different game every day. Many of the previous ones are still available — but they won’t be much longer, so hurry up.
  • 3 months of Audible for $4.95 per month. The standard subscription rate for Amazon’s audio book service: $14.95 per month. Right now, Prime subscribers can get the first three months for $4.95 each, a total savings of $30. Interestingly, there’s nothing to indicate this is for new subscribers only, so if you’ve tried Audible in the past, you may be able to get this deal. You can also give someone else the gift of Audible which is available in various monthly membership options.
  • Spend $10 at Whole Foods, get a $10 Amazon credit

Note that you need to be a Prime member to take advantage of these deals. But the good news is that Amazon Prime offers a free 30-day trial to those curious about trying the service. To access it simply click this link and follow the on-screen prompts. This is how I ended up with Prime — I signed up for a free trial and stuck around because of the free 2-day shipping and free movies. Tip: Anyone with a valid .edu email address can sign up for a 6-month free trial for Amazon Prime Student here.

Tip: I recommend you click “Watch Deal” for anything that interests you. Then you can monitor your deals on this page.

I will add to this list as I find more deals I think all my fellow techies would like. Set your alarms and have fun shopping! Let me know what you scored.

I hope this Prime Day Tech Lovers list helps you find some great deals this Prime Day! I know it’s helping me.
